Wastewater Infrastructure

A critical project to upgrade wastewater infrastructure to better support the island's operations, visitor experiences, and environmental protection.

Overview

Wadjemup / Rottnest Island’s wastewater system is nearing capacity and infrastructure is ageing. To support the island's increasing popularity and future development projects, the WA State Government is investing $15.8 million to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure.

This critical project will increase the system's capacity, replace ageing components, and ensure the infrastructure meets current standards and regulations. The upgrades are essential for supporting the island's operations, visitor experiences, and environmental protection.

Key benefits

Increased wastewater treatment capacity to meet current and future demand
Improved reliability and efficiency of the wastewater system
Enhanced regulatory compliance and environmental protection
Reduced risks of overflows, leaks, and environmental impacts
Support for new development projects and growth in visitation

Location

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Frequently asked questions

Significant components of Wadjemup's wastewater system are ageing and operating at or near capacity. This upgrade will replace outdated infrastructure, increase treatment capacity, and ensure the system can reliably support current and projected future demand.
Upgrading the wastewater infrastructure will reduce risks of overflows, spills and environmental contamination. It also supports RIA's sustainability goals by improving water recycling and reuse capabilities.
While temporary construction impacts are unavoidable, every effort will be made to minimise disruptions to visitors through seasonal timing and focused work locations.
