The Lodge Wadjemup Worker Accommodation

The Lodge Wadjemup will develop new worker accommodation to support its workers, enhance service quality and meet the needs of growing tourism.

Overview

Rottnest Island Authority has issued conditional approval to develop accommodation to support operations at the redeveloped The Lodge Wadjemup, addressing a critical need for housing workers, particularly during peak seasons.

The worker accommodation project is separate from the development of The Lodge Wadjemup's visitor accommodation and is essential to support the 24/7 operations of the facilities and amenities.

The worker accommodation will be developed in two stages and will provide housing and communal facilities for up to 102 occupants. The development is part of RIA's broader strategy under the Rottnest Island Management Plan 2023-28 to facilitate additional worker housing to support proposed new visitor accommodation operations. The project's location in the Thomson Bay Settlement Area is strategically chosen to align with Management Plan objectives.

Key benefits

Provides critical housing for The Lodge Wadjemup workers, ensuring the business can operate effectively and meet visitor demand
Enables extended operating hours and services by having workers accommodated on the island
Reduces demand on RIA's limited worker accommodation assets, allowing those to be prioritised for other essential island operations

Key dates

Construction begins: late 2024
Estimated completion: mid-late 2025

Location

The Lodge Wadjemup, South Thomson

Frequently asked questions

The development is part of RIA's broader strategy under the Rottnest Island Management Plan 2023-28 to facilitate additional worker housing to support proposed new visitor accommodation operations. Land to the south of existing developments on Parker Point Road, south of Thomson Bay, has been identified for construction of worker accommodation.
RLR Holdings Pty Ltd is the proponent for the development. RLR Holdings Pty Ltd will be the tenant of The Lodge Wadjemup site.

The site includes two managers’ houses, nine supervisors’ communal living units, nine detached line worker communal living units as well as shared facilities with kitchen, lounge, laundry and grassed area, bicycle parking, standalone storage area and bin store. It is anticipated the development will be delivered in two stages.

Stage 1 development is anticipated to start late 2024 with the completion date to be mid-late 2025.
A construction and traffic management plan will be in place during construction to minimise impacts to island visitors and businesses.

The worker accommodation development has received approval from Rottnest Island Authority following a thorough process, including cultural surveys, site identification, clearing permits and a probity audit. Conditions ensure implementation of bushfire management plans and vegetation offsets.

The newly approved development application for The Lodge Wadjemup worker accommodation is materially consistent with the original proposal that underwent public consultation in 2022.
