Mall Works Frequently Asked Questions

Island Gateway Project Frequently Asked Questions

The Island Gateway project will deliver infrastructure upgrades to the main mall, make visiting the area even more enjoyable with better amenity, and improve congestion issues by activating the full extent of the mall and surrounding area.

The works will include repaving, installing new furniture like bike racks, tables, seating and shade.

  • When and where will the works take place?

Construction activity and upgrade works will take place in the Settlement Mall, Heritage Common and surrounding areas between mid-May and September 2021. Works are scheduled to start at 7am each day and finish by 5pm. You can view a map of the impacted area here.

  • What difference will the Island Gateway project make?

The most obvious difference will be an even more enjoyable experience with upgraded infrastructure that activates the whole mall area, reduces congestion and makes it an even more pedestrian-friendly zone.

You’ll also notice more greenery, new paving and better amenities including more shade, seating, tables and bike racks. Some other improvements like upgrades to underground electrical and water services won’t be visible – but are still very important.

  • Will I still have access to the shops and businesses?

Yes! Businesses will remain open during the construction period and you’ll have safe access to all your favourites via fenced-off pedestrian walkways.

  • Will the construction activities disrupt my visit?

We hope not! There will be some inevitable noise, dust and extra traffic movements from time-to-time during the construction period. There may also be some disruptions to power and water services which will be carefully scheduled at night, if and when required, and with advance notice provided to businesses and guests.

You can be assured we are working hard to minimise any impact for visitors, residents and businesses. It’s some short-term inconvenience for long-term gain, and we thank you in advance for bearing with us while construction is underway.

  • Are any Island activities or businesses impacted?

Businesses and activity providers will remain open as usual during the construction period and you’ll have safe access to all your favourites via fenced-off pedestrian walkways.

  • How will I access businesses in the mall?

Please follow the directional signage when you arrive on Island.

  • How will I access accommodation on Vincent Way?

Please follow the directional signage when you arrive on Island.

If you are staying in accommodation on Vincent Way, when you collect your accommodation keys from the Visitor Centre staff will be able to assist you as well.

  • Is the playground open?

The playground adjacent to the mall will be closed from mid-May. Exciting upgrades to this playground equipment are planned with reopening anticipated mid-November 2021.

In the meantime, the nearest playground is in Thomsons Bay near the main jetty.
