Works and Service Notices
Works, service improvements, and other changes occur periodically across Wadjemup / Rottnest Island.
A range of projects are underway to refresh and revitalise the island facilities. At times, other factors such as environmental conditions, restricted access, or temporary closures may also be in place that may impact your visit. These measures aim to enhance the visitor experience, ensure visitor safety, and to preserve the island long term.

As part of the Main Jetty refurbishment project, the jetty pavement has been reconstructed and sealed with asphalt. New signage and berth markers will also be installed.
Fencing and traffic management will be in place to support normal operation of the jetty during these works.
Completion: 30 October 2026
The main bus stop will be undergoing upgrades in stages to include new shelters, lighting, accessible boarding points, pathways, and mulching.
There may be increased movement and noise in the area.
Completion: 30 June 2026
Works will involve installation of new electrical infrastructure and upgrades to campground power supply.
A power outage will be required in North Thomson to connect into the existing distribution network. Most works will occur while the campground is offline.
Completion: 24 June 2026
Bulk waste collection will be undertaken across residential areas, with bins located in North and South Thomson.
Residents will place waste outside properties for collection, and increased vehicle movements and noise may occur during placement and removal of bins.

The existing Main Bar biāfold doors will be replaced as they are end of life and no longer serviceable.
Works will be staged to maintain bar access, with minor noise and temporary barriers in place during construction.

Construction of the northern leg of the ring main water distribution system. This essential infrastructure will complete the ring system, improving water pressure and supply reliability across the island.
Machinery used during the works may result in increased noise in the area.

Replacement and upgrade of water distribution mains throughout settlement areas including installation of fire hydrants. Works will be delivered in stages to minimise disruption. Road detours will be in place, and machinery used during the works may result in increased noise in the area.

The existing Henderson ablution block will be demolished and replaced with a new facility, including family rooms, lockers, charging stations and accessible amenities.
The Henderson toilet facilities, including Changing Places, will be unavailable during construction. Fencing, signage and alternative arrangements will be in place to guide visitors during the works.

Works will involve the replacement of damaged concrete steps at the entrance to Hotel Rottnest, along with construction of a new concrete landing designed to improve drainage.
The main entrance to Hotel Rottnest will be temporarily closed during the works, however alternative access points will remain available for visitors.
Temporary fencing has been installed to restrict access and allow lawn repair and regrowth.
Visitors will not be able to access the lawn area during this period.

Wadjemup was used as an Aboriginal prison and forced labour camp between 1838 and 1931. State records indicate 4,000 Aboriginal men and boys from Western Australia were imprisoned on the island. Many of these men and boys did not return to their communities and families and remain buried on the island in the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground.
The site will become a place of reflection for all communities and will include areas of ceremonial spaces, accessible and elevated pathways, lighting, and interpretive content.
Works will also include the relocation of the access road to the Rottnest Island Golf Course.

A new pedestrian and vehicle access road to the golf course is under construction as part of the Wadjemup Aboriginal Burial Ground Memorialisation project.
Machinery used during the works may result in increased noise in the area.

The Rottnest Island Golf Course will be under remodelling with works to holes 3, 6, 7, and 8, the removal of hole 9, and the construction of a new fence.
The golf course will remain open throughout the works.

Ground investigations and tests will be taking place to support future hybrid electricity updates.

The Lodge Wadjemup is developing new worker accommodation to support its staff and operations and to enhance service delivery.
There will be an increase in traffic movements, including trucks, along Parker Point Road. Machinery noise will be audible in the South Thomson area during work hours only.
Completion: 25 June 2026
Potholing works will be undertaken to locate and identify the existing water main along Parker Point Road as part of the Water Distribution Network design.
Works will be carried out using a vacuum truck and localised hand excavation.
Local traffic management will be in place while works are undertaken.

The Rottnest Island Authority is progressing a new worker accommodation precinct to support on-island staff and contractors.
The project includes modular accommodation buildings, supporting earthworks, in-ground services and landscaping.
Most works will occur within the site boundary, with primary impacts relating to the delivery of machinery, materials and modular building units.
Completion: 28 August 2026
Installation of a sewer pump station in the area south of the railway line near Brand Way. The work is self-contained however there will be increased vehicle traffic from the barge landing.
Completion: 30 June 2027
Construction of the new Marine Logics Hub will relocate the barge operations from the Main Jetty to South Thomson Bay, replacing the existing Army Groyne.
Works will include construction of a barge ramp, laydown area and protecting seawall. Improvements will also be made to Army Jetty Road and the intersection with Parker Point Road.
There is restricted access to the area, and detours are in place. There will be an increase in traffic movement and noise in the area during works.

Completion: 12 June 2026
Construction of a hardstand area adjacent to beach access stairs. There will be delays to bike and pedestrian traffic using the access path between The Basin and Longreach accommodation area. Traffic controls will be in place.

Upgrade works will be undertaken at the Little Parakeet and Little Salmon Bay bus stops to improve accessibility and safety. The upgrades will make both bus stops DDA compliant.
Some minor disruptions to routine traffic movements may occur while construction works are underway.
