The plan to guide management of Rottnest Island is currently being reviewed as part of the WA Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy. The new Rottnest Island Management Plan (RIMP) 2023-28 will replace the current plan which was due to expire in December 2024.

Does the RIMP include land use?
An essential element of the draft RIMP 2023-28 is the Rottnest Island Land Use Plan that defines the proposed land uses within the settlement while importantly identifying the remainder of the island as a conservation and recreation reserve.

Why are you reviewing the plan now?
The new RIMP 2023-28 will replace the current plan which was due to expire in December 2024. The plan will help guide Rottnest Island’s priority management actions and is being reviewed as part of the WA Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy, as requested by the Minister for Tourism. Development of the new RIMP 2023-28 follows $100 million of State Government investment into key island infrastructure and visitor amenities to better service tourists and island businesses. This has included upgrades to the island's energy and water networks, roads, and jetties.

The outlook for sustainable growth in visitation is good. However, the island’s spectacular natural and unique heritage assets require active and adaptive management. The revised RIMP will take this new operating environment into consideration.

Where can I view the draft RIMP 2023-28?

Why are we asking for public comment?
The RIMP outlines Rottnest’s strategic management framework, and addresses the diverse interests and needs of visitors, businesses, Traditional Owners, and the island’s environment. The consultation process provides an opportunity for visitors, businesses, island residents, the community, and other stakeholders to have their say on the future of the island.

Will my submission receive a response?
Submissions will be reviewed, and an analysis of stakeholder feedback will be published on the website. Please note responses will not be provided to individual submissions.

What happens next?
The consultation period will be open for eight weeks, closing at 5 pm on Tuesday 9 May 2023. Following this, all feedback will be reviewed, and the plan will be revised where necessary to reflect community views. The final plan is expected to be completed in July 2023.
