The jewel in WA’s tourism crown, Rottnest Island, has won the coveted top spot in a survey of the most sought after first-date destinations in Australia. asked 2,000 Aussies where they would most like to go on a first date and the majority chose the unspoilt and car-free oasis of Rottnest over 19 other iconic Australian experiences including the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Harbour Bride and Uluru.

Rottnest Island, just off the coast of Perth, is famous for its laid-back feel where visitors can cycle round the island, see native animals like the quokka and snorkel the beautiful coral reefs. The island can be easily reached from Perth by ferry all year round.

In joint second place were Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory and another Western Australia favourite, Mitchell Falls in the Kimberley. In joint third and four place were Hamilton Island and the Blue Mountains.

Darren Williams from said: "Rottnest is no doubt a beautiful location – and perhaps getting a selfie with a quokka is the perfect way to break the ice on a first date! It’s really interesting to see Rottnest Island getting the top spot – there were so many amazing locations to choose from, but the island had something special."

The CEO of Rottnest Island Tourism, said: "Rottnest Island has long been a favourite spot to pop the question and to get married. We are thrilled that it’s also been chosen as the top place for romance to get started on a first date! Rottnest is for lovers!"

This could help anyone who’s about to embark on their first date – forget dinner and a movie and think about getting out into our beautiful country.
