Development in Heritage Areas

Rottnest Island has a number of buildings and places that are Heritage Listed.

Any development of a place or building that is within a heritage place or precinct requires approval from the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA).

Development Applications submitted to RIA in a heritage place or within a precinct will require referral to the Heritage Council of Western Australia (HCWA) unless an exemption has been granted.

The State Heritage Register (commonly known as inHerit) should be consulted for specific places and buildings.

For further information on State Heritage, please refer to Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.

Maps detailing the heritage area boundaries on Rottnest Island are available on the Development and Improvements Policy page.
