Inspiring: Meet the 59-year-old marathon swimmer who never gave up
Just 5km into this year’s Hotel Rottnest Port to Pub swim, Di Twigg was ready to give up.
The water between Fremantle and Rottnest was rough, and the 59-year-old says she was struggling to find a rhythm.
“My times were quite behind, because my skipper tells me every half hour how I’m going, and I just thought I’m wasting everybody’s time,” she said.
“I said ‘No that’s it, I’m getting out’, so I swam up to the boat and I nearly got in and the paddler, who’s a good friend, said ‘You don’t quit Di, don’t be silly’. So I stayed in and fortunately something changed in the conditions and I made up some of the time I lost and got there in the end.”
Professor Twigg made headlines when a video of her emerging from the water after more than 10 hours went viral.
Next year’s race is on March 25.
