What is the Discovery - Rottnest Island development?

The Discovery - Rottnest Island An eco sustainable resort (formerly Pinky Beach Eco Retreat) development is the first major development on Rottnest Island for many years. It will be an ecologically sensitive, world-class eco-camping resort that complements Rottnest Island Authority’s vision for revitalising the Island’s accommodation offerings.

The new resort will provide 83 accommodation eco-tents with a range of price points. It will be supported by Pinky’s Beach Club comprising a licenced bar, café, restaurant, function area and resort pool.

More details about the development are available on the proponent’s website here.

What benefits will the development bring?

The development will transform the area and establish a whole new visitor experience at Rottnest Island.

The new resort adds to the mix of accommodation offerings on the Island, offering a range of pricing points to visitors.

Access to Pinky Beach will be improved with two extra boardwalks to the beachfront and new access to the Basin provided, linking both areas to the Wadjemup Bidi walk trail.

Was community consultation undertaken as part of the development assessment process?

Formal community consultation of the proposed development plans for Discovery – Rottnest Island was undertaken 15 July to 6 August 2017, with all submissions presented and considered by RIA Board. The RIA Board conditionally approved the development in September 2017 subject to a suite of ‘conditions’.

What impacts will this have on the existing Campgrounds?

There have been no loss of campsites, although some campsites have been relocated within the area of the existing Campgrounds.

The Campgrounds will retain prime access to Pinky Beach.

Visitors staying at the Campgrounds during the period of construction can expect some minor disruption and increased traffic to the area. We are doing everything possible to ensure your stay is a good one.

Refer to the map for details of the changed layout.

Will construction cause disruption to visitors?

Visitors may expect some minor disruption and increased traffic to and from the area. Temporary fencing is in place around areas of the site.

We are working closely with the proponent to ensure the impact on the visitor experience is kept to a minimum.

Upgrades to the Campgrounds have been undertaken as part of the first stage of the development and have included resituating some campsites within the existing boundary of the Campgrounds.

When is construction commencing?

Construction works commenced in March/April 2018, with completion estimated for March 2019.

What times of the day will construction occur?

The hours of works are as follows:

  • Monday to Saturday, 7:00am to 6:00pm
  • Sundays, 9:00am to 6:00pm
  • No work on public holidays

Will there be additional traffic in the area?

Yes, visitors should expect additional traffic to and from the area. Vehicles involved in the construction will be travelling via a pre-approved route from the Main Jetty to the site.

Construction vehicles should be expected during construction hours.

The route the vehicles will take has been devised to ensure minimal disruption to visitors and the environment. This will take them behind the Visitor Centre and along the back of North Thomson beach, before briefly heading past the North Thomson and Caroline Thomson accommodation areas to access Gem Road.

For more details refer to the vehicle traffic map below.

Will access to Pinky Beach be affected?

All existing accessways to Pinky Beach have remained accessible to the public throughout the construction period and will continue to do so. This includes the accessway via the Campground, Gem Road and via the Bathurst Lighthouse.

Upon completion the Discovery - Rottnest Island development will provide two additional accessways to Pinky Beach and one additional accessway to the Basin, all via raised boardwalks. A condition of the development approval requires all walkways throughout the Discovery – Rottnest Island site to be accessible to the public.

The beach itself will remain open at all times to visitors.
