Rare bird sighted on Rottnest Island

Australian spotted crake

In an exclusive first, the Australian Spotted Crake has been sighted on Rottnest Island.

The Rottnest Island Authority’s (RIA) dedicated environmental team were lucky enough to spot the rare bird during routine frog monitoring in mid-August.

Birdlife Australia have confirmed this is the first ever record of the species on Rottnest Island, a finding which underscores the increasing numbers of bush birds within revegetated woodland areas.

The greater abundance and diversity of wetland birds can be attributed to RIA’s efforts to vastly improve the health of wetland vegetation across Rottnest Island.
