Perth in the top 10 of best places to visit in Australia: TripAdvisor
The world's largest travel website has put Perth into the top 10 of the hottest destinations for travellers to visit in Australia for the first time.
Perth came in at number seven on the list of the top ten destinations in the country, according to the 2016 TripAdvisor's travellers choice destinations awards.
Sydney topped the list, with the Gold Coast second.
The TripAdvisor website said despite Perth's remoteness it had plenty to offer.
"Perched on the banks of the wide Swan River, between the Indian Ocean and the sands of the Nullarbour Desert, Perth is one of the world's most isolated cities, yet still boasts an active beach scene and smokin' nightlife," the website claims.
"Family-friendly Cottesloe is brimming with swimmers, surfers and snorkelers. Head north to Scarbourough for a spirited beachside club scene. Coo at cute marsupials on ferry-accessible Rottnest Island, and don't miss the views from King's Park and Botanic Gardens."
The top travel gong comes after the travel website Trippy.com rated Perth number four on the world's most "hated cities" to visit.
The poor rating drew the wrath of well-travelled Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi.
"This one is on its own and we shouldn't give it too much credence," she said.
"We know otherwise with reference to the food culture comment, there has been such a blossoming of beautiful new venues, restaurants and cafes in the past few years."
"We are also in the midst of a work in progress where Perth is concerned – the city is changing very quickly, with more facilities coming online."
A Tourism WA spokesperson was also critical of Trippy's list.
"Anyone who has visited Perth recently would know that the city is undergoing a major transformation, with billion-dollar developments in the pipeline such as Elizabeth Quay, Perth City Link, the 60,000 seat Perth Stadium and the new museum," she said.
