Local swimmers dive into challenge
A NUMBER of local swimmers will hit the water for the first Port to Pub swim to Rottnest on Saturday.
The event has been formed out of the popularity of the Rottnest Channel Swim to allow those who missed registration for the annual showdown to make the swim to the island in another format.
An expected 800 to 900 racers will compete from Leighton Beach in Fremantle to Rottnest in solo, duo and team participation. The meet will include 20km races and an elite solo event of 25km for the best of Perth’s open water swimming talent.
Open water swimming champion Shelley Taylor-Smith has lent her expertise to the contest.
Olympic swimmers Eamon Sullivan, Jim Piper, Travis Nederpelt and Adam Lucas will join Australian champions Mark Riley and Bobby Jovanovich to make up a team in the 20km race category.
The event pays tribute to the first-ever crossing of the Rottnest Channel by German immigrant Gerd von Dincklage-Schulenburg in 1956.
