Tourism Minister Paul Papalia today announced that glamorous camping, otherwise known as ‘glamping’, accommodation will be available at Rottnest Island from summer 2018/19.

The announcement follows the conditional approval of plans to build a new beachfront eco-resort at the popular holiday destination.

The 2.8ha development, known as Pinky Beach Eco Retreat and Beach Club, will be an ecologically sensitive, world-class eco retreat that complements the Rottnest Island Authority's vision for revitalising the Island’s accommodation offerings.

“This is a significant milestone for Rottnest Island and is the first major development in many years,” the Minister said.

“Catering for tourists and families, the resort will comprise 86 eco accommodation tents with ensuites and high level comforts as well as budget tents.

“This development will transform the area and establish a whole new visitor experience at Rottnest.”

The Eco Retreat will provide different levels of accommodation to suit various budgets, available from approximately $100 up to $350 per night.

The accommodation will be supported by a beach club comprising a licenced bar, cafe, restaurant and function area with views over the ocean to Perth.

“Anyone who has seen Rottnest Island’s beaches will understand the value for visitors to be able to sit back, relax and take in the breathtaking views and setting sun,” the Minister said.

Access to Pinky Beach will also be improved with the development, with two extra boardwalks and new access to the Basin, linking to the Wadjemup Bidi walk trail.

The conditional approval for the development was granted following a public consultation process.
