Delivering acknowledgement before pizza

Frankie's on Rotto opening ceremony

Sunday saw the first pizzas roll out the door at Frankie’s on Rotto.

Offering the Island’s first ever pizza delivery service, Frankie’s was inundated with orders after opening its doors for the first time.

Before the pizza service began, visitors were treated to a traditional Welcome to Country and Aboriginal smoking ceremony on the deck outside the pizzeria.

The smoking ceremony involves burning native plants to produce smoke, an ancient Aboriginal custom to cleanse the land and ward off bad spirits.

Frankies’ on Rotto Director Lee Bartlett arranged the opening ceremony to acknowledge the Island’s traditional Whadjuk owners, and the initiative was echoed later in the day when another smoking ceremony was held before Xavier Rudd opened the SummerSalt concert at Hotel Rottnest.

The acknowledgements complement plans by the Rottnest Island Authority to hold afternoon smoking ceremonies on December weekends as summer visitors flock to the Island.

The smoking ceremonies form part of the RIA’s Reconciliation Action Plan and will be held in the traditional place by the water’s edge in Thomson Bay.
